Biography

Cheryl Cashman is an acclaimed Canadian director/writer/teacher/performer. She is of potato-famine Irish descent (whence comes her twisted sense of comedy and lovely voice) Born and raised in the Ottawa Valley, her rural roots made hunting, fishing, trapping, and building on remote lakes the landscape of her upbringing.

She began performing at the age of five when told there was a God who was always watching her. She hit the stage at twelve, singing arias and Gounod masses, made her acting debut at seventeen in a Restoration Comedy, discovered directing at twenty-one in the University of Alberta's M.F.A. Directing program, and Clowning at twenty-nine with Richard Pochinko.

Her heroes are Peter Brook, Louis Riel and Robin Williams. She traveled to see theatre in Europe, South America, Greece, Cuba and New York, and returned to Canada to express her ideals. She performed and directed some 200 plays across the country, ranging from classical to original, (among them her two hit solos), finally settling in Toronto. Here she gained a career and lost a nervous system. She has taught in almost every major university and theatre school in Canada. At one point she said: "I've worked in every province in Canada except the Arctic but I'm not dead yet." Last winter she taught and directed Inuit actors on the northernmost tip of Baffin Island.

She loves to read, ride horses, paint, travel, clown, swim, snorkel and learn languages. Now she dreams of a tiny cottage in a secluded grove with mountains and sea somewhere in the middle of Toronto.

Interests

I have travelled extensively and seen theatre in London, Paris, Amsterday, Brussels, Copenhagen, Berlin, Wroclav, Prague, Madrid, Athens, Havana, Mexico, St. Kitts and New York.

I enjoy fishing, swimming, snorkeling, riding horses, songwriting, piano, painting and gardening. I speak English, French and Spanish.

I have had, since the age of 17, a deep affinity for the Aboriginal Cultures of my country, because of the sacred nature of life embodied in their way of life and ceremonies. I have recently had the extraordinary experience of spending 3 months doing theatre with Inuit actors in the hamlet of Pond Inlet, Nunavut, Arctic Canada.
