Performance Testing

Swine genetic testing in Canada was initiated in 1928. Since that time, the industry has had access to a uniform national testing system providing breeders with a sound basis for the evaluation of their breeding stock.

Breeders are regularly visited by a certified swine technician who weighs the boars and gilts and ultrasonically measures backfat thickness. The traits evaluated are adjusted to 100 kg live weight for backfat, age and average daily gain. Test data is entered on a portable computer and reports are issued to the breeder the same day.

In addition, a Sow Productivity and Management Program designed to evaluate litter size and the productivity value of the sow has been implimented. The evaluation is based on the total weaning weight of the litter while taking into account the number weaned. EBVs are then calculated for litter size.

All these tests provide the data required to improve and effectively manage the quality of the swine produced in Canada, and further assures the international buyer that Canada's swine is among the best in the world. This program is under the supervision of the Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement
